Vista RC2, Virtual Server 2007

Last time around, I said the performance in RC2 had gotten substantially worse than RC1. It seems that assessment was premature and I am now things seem a lot better. I downloaded Virtual PC 2007 from my beta program and it is running very well under Vista. Right now, Vista is handling the following load with little noticeable performance issues:

  1. Outlook 2007 with RSS Feeds updating
  2. GetRight downloading the Windows SDK
  3. Virtual PC 2007 installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise to USB drive
  4. Windows Media Player 11/URGE streaming Beck - The Information
  5. This app
  6. Windows Live OneCare Beta 1.5
  7. Various IE7

The problem with RC2 that remains is that my NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 doesn't have Glass. Any of the WDDM drivers I install gets disabled by Vista on boot and reverted to the standard VGA driver. I'm glad that Microsoft is doing the right thing here as 95% of Windows blue screens and such issues are caused by bad drivers. I am disappointed however that something seems wrong here with my card as I know its a supported card and maybe its an RC2 bug.

Oh, one thing that is mighty cool in Vista is something I have always wanted in Windows like forever - the ability to shrink or expand partitions from the Disk Manager. I was worried about having to go out and doing it with Acronis but didn't have to!

Important Note on the above from Daniel Moth - "but be careful with drives/partitions at the end of the disc as they cannot be extended with no workaround (at the time I looked at this at least)."

True, but be careful with drives/partitions at the end of the disc as they cannot be extended with no workaround (at the time I looked at this at least).

Sam,

What laptop are you using that has the Go5200? My Toshiba M200 with Go5200 32MB of ram runs glass fine. Maybe it's an issue with your particular laptop?

Shahn, thanks for responding.

I have a big Toshiba Satellite P25-S609 which has the NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200. The default driver that Vista installs works 100% excellently. It just isn't a WDDM driver so its not capable of doing Glass. There are 4-6 other choices for this chip that are WDDM drivers. In the past, like RC1, I was simply able to set my driver to one of those WDDM drivers. Now, the changes in RC2 stop me from doing that because it terms it an unsupported driver and reverts to the VGA driver. Are you sure you using RC2? Did you use a WDDM driver? If so, which one? Thanks!
